FAQs About GSA Online Journal Access

The Gerontological Society of America's journals are online at www.gerontologyjournals.org

What are the benefits of online access?
  • When you are out of town or away from your desk, you can refer to your current and recent issues of GSA's journals by reading the full text online or printing out a PDF.
  • Articles' reference lists provide links, when possible, to Medline and to abstracts and full texts of articles from more than 297 journals available from other publishers at HighWire Press.
  • You can use CiteTrack Personal Alerts to receive e-mail notification when a new article on a topic of interest to you, by a certain author, or that cites another article you have specified is published in GSA's or other participating journals.

Who can access journals online?
Access to the full-text articles in GSA's online journals is a benefit of GSA membership. All regular and student GSA members receive online access to the complete text of articles in the journals to which they subscribe by mail.
As of January 2003, institutional subscribers may select either print only or print and online subscriptions. (For more information, visit www.gerontologyjournals.org/subscriptions/institutionwelcome.shtml)
Nonmembers (the general public) have access only to the online abstracts (and not the full text) of articles in GSA journals.

Who cannot access the full text of journal articles online?

  • Nonmembers can access the full text of articles online only through an on-site computer at an institution with a combination print and online subscription to the GSA journals. (Contact your university/research library to determine if they offer online access to the journals.)
  • Persons with a spousal membership do not receive personal online access to the journals. These individuals may, however, use their spouse's user name and password to access the journals online.
  • Individuals whose memberships have expired will not be able to resume online access until GSA has received and processed their membership fees.

I am a member and have accessed the online journals in the past. Why does the website no longer accept my username/password?
It is likely that your membership has expired. If you do not renew your membership, you will only be able to access article abstracts online. After renewing a lapsed membership, your online access will be reinstated. To find out if your membership has expired, please e-mail membership@geron.org.

Why doesn't my institution have access to the journals online?
As of January 2003, institutional subscribers may choose between print only and print and online subscriptions to the GSA journals. For more information, please visit www.gerontologyjournals.org/subscriptions/institutionwelcome.shtml

Which journals can I access online?
The following journals, published by GSA, are available online:
Journals of Gerontology: Series A (Biological Sciences & Medical Sciences)
Journals of Gerontology: Series B (Psychological Sciences & Social Sciences)
The Gerontologist

Members have online access to the full text of articles of the journals that they currently receive in print.
Institutions have online access to the full text of articles of the journals for which they have a print and online subscription.

Why can't I find some articles online?
Only the full-text articles of journals published since 2000 are available to view online; for journals published in the 1990s only abstracts have been placed in the online archive. GSA periodically publishes special issues of its journals. The special issues currently are not accessible online. We are currently investigating the possibility of adding more back issues, as well as our special issues, to the online archive, but our inquiries are in the preliminary stage.

How much does online access cost?
Online access for individuals is a benefit of membership in GSA, and is currently free of charge to members.
Institutions may purchase a print plus online subscription to GSA journals. For subscription pricing, visit http://www.geron.org/journals/pricelist.htm.

When can I access the online journals?
You will be able to access the journals online after GSA receives and processes your membership dues. GSA will send an e-mail with a temporary access ID; you will have access to your regular online account within six weeks.

How can I find out my member ID?
All GSA members are assigned an eight-digit member ID. New members will receive a membership card in the mail which will list their member ID. New members will have online access through a temporary account until their regular online subscription is available.

Current members can find their member ID above their name on the address label of their print journals or on their renewal notice. Note: If the number is fewer than eight digits, add enough zeros to the beginning of the number to make it eight digits.

I am a first time user. How do I activate my online membership?
On the main journal page, http://www.gerontologyjournals.org/, there is a blue button entitled "Subscriptions." Click on this link. On the next page, select "ACTIVATE Your Member Subscription." You will then be asked to enter your eight-digit member ID (see above). The next page will request subscriber information as well as a user name and password. You yourself will select your own user name and password; these are not provided by GSA.

How do I access the journals online?
Go to our main journal page at http://www.gerontologyjournals.org/. From here, click onto the journal that you wish to access. When you click onto your journal, you will see a new screen with these choices: "Select an Issue from the Archive" or "Search for Articles."

"Search for Articles" is available to everyone (with or without a membership) and allows you to search our archives for past articles on a particular subject or by a particular author. Search results are displayed with the option to view the full text (available only to those with a membership) or the abstract only (available to the general public). When you click on "Full Text," the sign-in screen will prompt you for your user name and password. Once you enter these, you will be able to access freely as many other articles as you would like.

"Select an Issue from the Archive" gives you access to all recent issues. Click on the issue (month) you want, and then on the section. You will see a complete listing of articles for that month's issue. Again, you can view the abstract or the full text.

What if I forget my user name or password?
From the main journal page, http://www.gerontologyjournals.org/, select the blue button labeled "Subscriptions," and then "ACTIVATE Your Member Subscription." After entering your eight-digit member ID, a page will appear stating that you already have an active account. Click on the "I've forgotten my user name and/or password" link. By reentering either your user name or member ID, the online journal will create a new, random password for you. This new password will be automatically e-mailed to you.

How do I change my password?
Log in to view an article as described above, using your current password. Once you have accessed the article, you will see your name in bold letters at the top of the screen, along with a strip of possible options. Right next to your name it says "Change Password." Click on this and follow the instructions.

I have a membership number. Why can't I access the journals online?
It is likely that your membership has expired. If you do not renew your membership, you will only be able to access article abstracts online. After renewing a lapsed membership, you will have to use a temporary account until your regular online subscription is reactivated. Information on your temporary account will be provided via e-mail after GSA processes your renewal. To find out if your membership has expired, please e-mail membership@geron.org.

Another possibility is that you do not have the correct membership number. Please contact geron@geron.org to verify your number. (Remember that your member number must be eight digits; add zeroes to the front of the number to make it eight digits.)

Not all of my questions have been answered. Where can I find out more information?
You can learn more about activating and managing subscriptions at http://www.gerontologyjournals.org/subscriptions/. You will also find information, including Frequently Asked Questions, on the "Help" page (http://www.gerontologyjournals.org/help/). The "Help" page can be accessed from the "Subscriptions" or "Search Across All Journals" pages. If, after reviewing the "Help" page, you still are having difficulties, please e-mail geron@geron.org with your question. Be sure to give us your complete name, membership ID, e-mail address, and telephone number.
